A man can blow his chances with a woman even before he blows it with the line "Do you sleep on your stomach?" Anthropologist Dr Helen Fisher, author of Why We Love, explains what a woman immediately notices about a man, and why.
YOUR BEARING Carry yourself as if you're going somewhere. She's looking for someone who can make money and take care of your children - this is a global girl thing, confirmed in a study of 37 societies. It's your job to project high levels of education, ambition, social class and access to resources, so hold your head high and exude confidence. (And change out off the cut-offs). For a short term fling, Fisher says ,"She'll usually pick a symmetrical, good-looking man, because he has the best genes." It's Average Joe all over again
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP "Men in groups tend to become very boyish in ways that intimidate women," says Fisher. "Men are always trying to one-up each other by saying something faster, funnier or dirtier." This makes women feel out of place. Ever notice that when a guy goes out with beer-funnelling posse of meathead friends, he goes home with a beer-funnelling posse of meathead friends? We're not saying dump your friends; but if meeting women is your goal, consider a trial separation.
HOW YOU INTERACT WITH OTHERS She knows you'll be on your best behaviour while chatting her up. So, for a true clue as to the real you, she'll watch how well you play with others. Did you under-tip the waitress? You're cheap. Did you make fun of the fat chick in the corner? You're mean. Did you grab the door for that older woman? You're cool, and she wants your business card.
HOW YOU HANDLE MONEY How you carry cash, not just how you spend it, says a lot. A wad of crumpled notes indicates irresponsibility. A money clip risks charges of pretentiousness. Your best bet is a slim, organized wallet. It says; yes, you have money; yes' you're responsible; and yes, you have style.
YOUR APPROACH Or, more precisely, your reaction to her subtle invitation. "Most of the time, it's the woman who makes the first move by smiling or making eye contact," Fisher explains. "After that, it's up to the man. This is called initiative transfer." If a man tries to transfer the initiative without an invitation, he's hurting his odds of success. We heard it worked once for a guy, but he might have been lying.
